Sangatte

On July 1909 Hubert Latham and Louis Blériot settled at Cap Gris Nez, close to Calais and 33 kilometers from the cliffs of Dover. They waited for favourable weather conditions to attempt the crossing of the channel. On July 19 Latham attempted the crossing but after some kilometres his monoplane Antoinette IV had to splashdown and be recovered by their rescue destroyer.
On July 25 Blériot took off, after having asked the direction of Dover, he completed the journey in 5 hours 13 minutes.

Bleriot Plage is recommended to artists, hikers, photographers, botanists, ornithologists and historians.
Between Calais and the cliffs of Cap Blanc Nez the fine sandy beaches of Sangatte and Bleriot Plage extend for 8kms behind a cordon of sand dunes.
The resort is well equipped with family accommodation and restaurants.
It is ideal for tennis, walking, fishing and petanque but the principal activities are sail related.
