Berck sur mer

Berck sur mer takes it's name from the German word "berg" which refers to the dune which rose in the centre of the village. The town has been  known for its trade and fishing harbour from the middle ages, there were a hundred fishing boats in 1900. But, it is because of Marianne Bouville, nicknamed "simply "Marianne", that comes the credit for the expansion  of the resort.
Marianne, having lost her husband and her four children following the cholera epidemic of 1852, devoted herself to the children of the fishermen. They entrusted her with the sick whose health was threatened. In the fresh air, the children's health improved.
Marine air could have a therapeutic value, the sun-and-seawater remedy had been born!
